I mean, I don't think G5 will be greater than G4 because pretty much nothing is, that's not a slight against it in any way. It's off to a great start in its own right.
The other major character is a unicorn kind of like twilight who wants rights for her ponies, and she and the main pegasus form the main duo. The MC (main character) remembers a time when friendship was commonplace in Equestria and the races got along.

As far as I know, the mane six will still be the main characters of the new generation, but with different designs and with slightly different personalities (at least for Applejack) I don't think they would replace the mane six with different ponies because the whole MLP franchise for the past ten years has been built off the mane six, they're basically the face of the MLP franchise at this point.
